Brief / Challenge. To removed the honey bees from a chimney stack, the bees have been on site for around four years. The client wishes them removed as he is selling his property.

Survey Finding. The building was built in 1854 and has six bedrooms. The hive is located in the second chimney pot of four located at the rear of the property adjacent to the five bedroom. There is a hole in the flaunching or crown of the chimney stack allowing the honey bees to gain access. An asbestos survey has already been carried out. Scaffolding will be required at the rear of the house with a scaffold saddle going around the chimney stack 1 meter from the crown. Colour matches of the brick work and crown have been taken to ensure a perfect match.

The service we delivered. We attended site on the day of the scaffold erection to ensure the scaffold was located in the correct place and the client was happy with the pace and standard of work. We returned the second day to removed the honey bees this required the removal of the four chimney pots and the crown of the chimney. Once the hive was exposed, we removed the Queen bee and the honey comb which reached down over 2 meters followed the lining of the chimney stack and the remaining bees. The bees were transported to a local bee keeper. On day 3 we proofed the chimney so honey bees would not return, we replaced the crown of the chimney and the chimney pots, once this was completed, we repointed the top five levels of brick further proofing the chimney stack. In total we saved over 3500 honey bees
