Larkfield Way

Solar panel proof work

Case Study No 002

Client. Private home owner

Overview. Our client asked us to install solar panel pigeon spikes.

Industry. Home owner

Project Name. Larkfield Way

Project Location. Allesley Green, Coventry.

Brief / Challenge. To prevent pigeons from roosting under the solar panels and fowling the driveway and parked cars.

Survey Finding.
Several pigeons were observed exiting and entering the gap between the solar panels and the roof. Plastic spikes had previously been installed under the panels; these were not fit for purpose as the pigeons could push them apart to gain entry to the void under the solar panels. The roof had clumps of moss growing on it. Moss is a food source for pigeons. Due to the undulating pattern of the roof tiles wire mesh would not be suitable, adjustable solar spikes would be the best option as these can be adjusted.

The service we delivered.
Prior to the installation of the solar panel spikes the roof and the solar panels were sprayed with a bio clean to remove the moss and the pigeon droppings.
A scaffold was erected across the front of the property with safety rails on either side of the roof for the protection of the engineers. In lines with our PPE and RAMs all our engineers wore safety helmets, safety harnesses and protective eye wear. The edges of the solar panels were given a final clean to ensure that the contact adhesive would bond with the panels and the spikes. 500mm in length by 160mm in height solar pikes were installed along the edge of the solar panels, these were adjust following the pattern of the roof tiles to ensure that there where no gaps greater then 10mm. Two spike clips attached to either end of each of solar panel spikes ensured that the spikes would never move. The spikes were trimmed to length preserving the clean lines of the panels.
