Is Your Loft Letting You Down?

If your home feels colder than it should or you’ve spotted signs of rodents in the loft, it might be time to replace your insulation. Old or damaged insulation not only wastes energy and money — it can also create the perfect environment for pests.

Rodents carry diseases that pose health risks to your family. They can also chew through electrical cables and damage anything stored in your loft, from keepsakes to holiday decorations.

Don’t wait for the problem to get worse — contact us today for a free insulation quote and protect your home.

How Thick Should Loft Insulation Be to Keep Your Home Warm?
To maximise energy efficiency and keep your home cosy, the UK government recommends a loft insulation thickness of 270mm — that’s almost the length of a standard ruler.

Since loft legs are generally 195mm, fitting loft boards on top means your storage platform should ideally be around 350mm above the ceiling. This allows the insulation to expand properly and breathe, reducing the risk of damp while keeping your home warmer and your energy bills lower.

Can I Get a Grant for Loft Insulation?

Yes — you might be eligible for funding through the Great British Insulation Scheme, a government-backed programme designed to help households improve energy efficiency and reduce heating bills.

This scheme, along with the ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) initiative, is running until March 2026 and could cover part or all of the cost of your loft insulation — depending on your circumstances.

Can Loft Boards Be Installed Over Insulation?

Yes — loft boards can be installed over insulation, but it’s essential to do it correctly.

To avoid compressing your insulation and reducing its effectiveness, you’ll need to install loft legs (or risers) before boarding. These specially designed supports raise the boards above the insulation, preserving its full depth and thermal performance.

Would I Need a Loft Survey?

Yes — a professional loft survey is important before any work begins. It accurately measures your loft space to ensure the right amount of insulation is installed.

The survey also checks for potential hazards like asbestos and signs of rodent activity, both of which pose health risks and must be addressed before insulation work can safely proceed.

Does My Loft Need to Be Clear?

Yes — your loft should be cleared before work begins. This allows us to carry out a thorough biochemical spray and hygienic cleaning once the old insulation is removed.

Clearing the loft beforehand helps keep costs down, as if we need to move your belongings for you, it will add to the time and expense of the job.
